Renting A House In Ottawa Offers The Advantages Of Three Major Rivers
Living in Ottawa has many advantages. Ottawa, Ontario is perfectly located at the junction of three major rivers. These rivers include the Gatineau River, the Ottawa River, and the Rideau River. With the addition of the Rideau Canal which snakes through the heart of of the city, Ottawa has plenty of picturesque waterfront parks and pathways. These parks and pathways lend themselves to all sorts of pleasant activities.
The biggest of the three runs from West to East, and marks the border between Ontario and Quebec. Hull, Quebec is right across the river from Ottawa. The Gatineau River empties into the Ottawa River from the North, whereas the Rideau River empties into the Ottawa River from the South, at an impressive set of falls, for which they were named, as “Rideau” is French for “curtain”, which is what the falls look like.
Sailing is a very popular sport on the Ottawa River. There are several clubs along the river in the Ottawa vicinity, but because you can not navigate the Ottawa River through Ottawa, some of these clubs are separated and the boats sail in their own respective waters. The two most popular clubs are at the West end of the city, and are the Brittania Yacht Club – the oldest of the two and most typical of an old private sailing club, and the Nepean Sailing Club, which was originally a city run establishment, but has since turned into a private members only club.
From either the Britannia Yacht club or the Nepean Sailing Club, sailors enjoy the waters of Lake Dechennes which is not really a lake but rather a broad portion of the Ottawa River. Sailors sail east away from the city as rapids and rocks are located between the clubs and the centre of the city.
Other than sailing, there are plenty of other ways that you can appreciate the 3 large river systems that converge at Ottawa. The Rideau Canal, as well as the Ottawa River, have extensive waterside parks and trail systems, which are ideal for walking, running, cycling and rollerblading. If you prefer to be on the water, there is plenty of opportunity to kayak, with several outdoor stores offering rentals and lessons. Canoes are also available, and of course the age old pastime of fishing is always very popular. For tourists, there are several tours available which give you a history of the town and rivers while you enjoy a scenic ride either on the Ottawa River or the Rideau Canal.
Ottawa is a beautiful city, and the number of major waterways which are accessible in such a small area certainly has something to do with it’s beauty and attraction to people. If you are renting a house in Ottawa, it makes sense to try to find one located close to one of the major waterways, in order to take advantage of all the beauty and activities that they have to offer.
