Seeking The Runner’s High

So what exactly is a runner’s high? In this post I want to briefly discuss what getting this phenomenon means. For many people it simply happens by accident. The usual occurrence happens as follows- you are in a race or are running in a long run and your legs and body feel like they just won’t stop and you are feeling as light as a further and with endless energy.

Other elements that identify this condition include having the feeling that you are invincible, that your legs wont stop and that you can run for miles without getting tired/. In short people say runner’s high is like having an orgasm and there is bliss. You feel high and joyful. Runners high can be equated to a Zen like state or Zen running, where your run seems to be effortless. It often feels like you are soaring through the air and you are one with the wind and there is a deep measure of exhilaration. In short it has been described as being intense as an orgasm.

The runners high for most people tends to happen after thirty to forty minutes of continuous running. It is rarely found in the beginning of a run.

It should be noted that most people equate the runners high as a physiological phenomenon and as such it can’t be duplicated. That is why some days you get it and other days it is impossible to achieve. This is false as it is not physiological but rather it is a mental phenomenon. In reality this high is actually the complete absence of the mind. At that point time is forgotten and as time ceases there is the complete absence of the self or ego.

Self forgetfulness removes the limitation on the mind and so there may be no runner just running and the run. This really is why you don’t feel tired when you are having the runners high. This is so, simply because with no ego there is no runners (the ego), so the run and running also cease to exist. You will be in the Zen like mode.

So how does one achieve the runners high? It is simply achieved by quieting the mind. There are certain techniques that can be used to forget the self or the ego. With the forgetting of the self the runners high is achieved. So in a way achieving this state is a contradiction in itself because it can only be achieved when you are running in the moment or in the now. At that moment there are no goals and no mind to achieve those goals.

It goes even deeper that this, because when you forget yourself, the “you” who wants to achieve this high is also forgotten and the run, the runner and running become one.

Some individuals use meditation to obtain this high but it is a false way to get this high. The reason this is so is because meditation requires the presence of a doer or the ego to meditate and this doer or ego prevents the occurrence of self forgetfulness.

In short if you forget yourself, you will be able to achieve the runners high at will, almost effortlessly. There will be no goal to achieve in your run and before you know it, you will be running with the wind and the run running and the runner will become one.
