If you do choose 4×4 tires that are more than 31 inches, it’s likely that your vehicle will require a lift. Before investing in taller tires, make sure that you won’t be required to lift your vehicle higher than is currently legal in your area.
Another thing to keep in mind is that when you raise your vehicle to utilize taller 4×4 tires, the center of gravity of your vehicle will be raised as well. This can increase the chance roll overs. It’s important that you’re sure to drive carefully and to add extra safety features to ensure that you’re remaining not just street legal, but street safe as well.
Tires made especially for mud are one popular option in 4×4 tires. When you choose these tires, be sure that you’re using them in the right conditions. While they do work excellently in off roading conditions that involve mud, they can result in a loss of traction in icy conditions. As a result, be sure that you’re changing your mud tires to snow tires in the winter months.
When you’re planning an off roading trip, you can decrease the tire pressure in your 4×4 tires. This will increase your traction when driving in off roading conditions. However, be aware that when your pressure is lowered, your speed will be lowered. In fact, driving over 15 miles per hour you’ll notice a decided difference with lowered air pressure. The best plan is to lower pressure right before you begin off roading, and add the pressure back when you travel back to the road.
