Boxing Or Bag Gloves For Heavy Bag Work

Bag gloves can really help your hands from getting torn up. The first time I trained on a sand bag I had bloody knuckles.

One thing to be stressed is that bag gloves are meant for training and not for use with an opponent. They are made with little padding and will not protect your partner.

It is up to you whether to use hand wraps. Just be sure to size your gloves accordingly. Heavier gloves will help condition you for the rigors of boxing.

Hand wraps offer wrist protection which can be good but you will also want to work up to not using them so you can condition for ground fighting which requires mobility in the wrists.

Traditional Boxing Gloves

There is a little confusion over the availability of these bag gloves since many people will opt to use traditional boxing gloves for their workouts.

There is no problem in using your 16 ounce boxing gloves on the bag. But you can save the wear and tear on your more expensive boxing gloves, by using the bag gloves.

Using heavy bag gloves provides wrist support to help prevent injuries. They are made of leather or vinyl and look like mittens and have some padding on the knuckles.

Construction

Of course it is not to say that you have complete protection, but they do certainly cut down to risk of injury.

The heavy bag is designed to optimize power and endurance so that is why it has little give. Therefore, you will need to be able to hit the bag with force and not worry about getting injured.

Here is the problem though: every time you use such gloves you end up degrading them a little bit. So, you end up lessening the life of the gloves when you frequently use them on the heavy bag.

Other Workouts

You can use these gloves for workouts on the speed bag, double end bag or muay thai bag. You can shadow box with them. Just no sparring!

As for MMA gloves, it is best not to use them on a heavy bag since they are not intended at all for this type of training. You will end up wearing out the gloves prematurely and the finger free nature of the gloves presents a serious risk for an injury on a heavy bag. As such, don’t use your MMA gloves for this purpose.

What To Purchase

When purchasing heavy get the ones with the most adequate protection. Avoid the ultra-thin ones as they just do not offer enough support.

Look for durable heavy gloves. Stay away from the thin gloves. Leather is the best option but vinyl will work. You’ll just need to replace them sooner.

The UFC heavy bag gloves are my personal recommendation and Century and Bad Boy heavy gloves are good as well. I have had experience with all three brands and would say that any of the three are a good option.
