A Beginner’s Look At The Proper Way To Clean A Handgun Effectively From Alliance Armament

Guns can be excellent tools for hunting and for personal protection. In order to make sure that they are kept in as good a condition as possible, learning the proper way to clean a handgun is critical. This allows you to notice any problems or flaws before they become a safety hazard. It also ensures that your gun will not break down over time and develop cracks or flaws that may make safety a problem.

It is easier for you to clean your weapon properly if you have two things. You need the proper tools and a safe place in which to work. Once you have these you will be able to move on to the actually cleaning. Learning what kind of gun you own is important because how you clean it will depend on whether it is an automatic, a semi-automatic or whether the gun needs to be cocked between firing each round.

You then need to know how to ensure that the gun is not loaded. There are several places that a round can sit. The first is in a magazine attached to the gun. Follow the instructions you have been given and remove the magazine. Then, slide the bolt back and put your finger in the chamber. Feel around quickly to make sure that there are no rounds. The third area that rounds can sit is in the well. Again, feel for it with a finger. Never check by looking down the barrel. This is one way to get shot in the head, which is usually fatal.

Once you know it is not loaded, you can take the slide off by cocking the hammer and pulling on the take down tabs. The slide will move forward and you can remove it. Clean the slide, the frame, the guide rod and the barrel as well as the recoil spring. Use solvent to do so.

Guns are cleaned by removing the build-up of carbon and unburned gun powder. Cleaning can also remove any skin oils that have transferred to the gun due to handling. By using solvent to break up the residues and a brush and cloth to wipe them off, you can clean your gun very safely and effectively. Clean the barrel inside and outside. Use special brushes and tools that come in a cleaning kit to do so. Also eyeball the pieces in order to make sure there are no cracks or chips that will need to be repaired. Finally, after the cloths stay clean when the gun is wiped and there is no more residue it can be reassembled.

The final step after reassembly is to oil the gun lightly. You want to make sure there is no way that moisture can damage the gun in any way. The last thing you want is to think that you have learned the proper way to clean a handgun only to find out that it has become damaged or unserviceable over the time it spends in storage.
