Watch Different Types of Horse Race Events for More Thrills
You’re probably aware that there are many different types of horse race, even if you might have trouble naming more than a couple. The ones you know will likely be those that get the most publicity; after all, the most prestigious races, like the Kentucky Derby or other thoroughbred racing events, are televised with great fanfare. But other types of races have had a parallel development, both in the United States and elsewhere, with horse breeds that follow right along with them.
Thoroughbred races are in the category of flat racing since they run on a flat oval track. Quarter horses also race on a flat track, but it is straight, and only a quarter mile long. These horses run at full speed through their race, contrasting with thoroughbreds which, although the fastest horses in the world, vary their speed during their longer races. Meanwhile, the harness race, with standard-bred horses pulling a cart and driver on a banked oval track, is another type of horse race that developed in the United States and was exported to the rest of the world.
Those are the forms of horse race most common in North America, and events in all three varieties can be seen in lots of other countries too. However other kinds of horse races are even more prevalent in different parts of the planet, with some only starting to grow prevalent here.
For starters, the Steeplechase, which is a race featuring an obstacle course and a few jumps the horse has to take, is very popular in Britain, although it is not seen as often in the United States. As well, Arabian racing is just beginning to make its presence felt here, in new events established to promote Arabian race horses.
Of course, at almost any horse race, you can add to the excitement by placing bets to see if you can gauge which horses will be most successful. If you’re a beginner just going to your first race, then you might do well to get some advice on how to read the race program and Daily Racing Form first, and sit back and observe for awhile, before trying to bet. But once you’ve got a feel for the process, give it a try. Watch the races for the beauty and power of the horses themselves, but add some extra spice with a little bet to round out your enjoyment.
Everyone should go to see a horse race at least once in their lives. People are packed in the stands, each rooting for their own pick. When it comes to horse racing betting, the lucky ones wind up winning but even the losers still get to be a part of the excitement that makes up horse racing.
