Portugal – Could This Be Your Next Golf Holiday Destination?
Portugal can boast some of the most sort after golfing holidays in Europe. Thanks to the brilliant year round climate and the top quality courses, hotels and resorts, the Algarve has become renowned for being a perfect foreign golf holiday destination.
For larger groups, the action packed town of Vilamoura is the best destination. In addition to the nightlife that is focused on the marina, Vilamoura has seven championship golf courses. Choosing from the Algarve’s endless golfing delights can be tricky, but some recommendations are the Penina resort, Dona Filipa, which boasts San Lorenzo, arguably the country’s best track, and the relatively new Monte Rei development in the Algarve’s east.
Slightly further afield is the charming island of Madeira where sunny golf holidays can be found, but one spot that is emerging as the next big thing is the golf coast of Lisbon. The shoreline of the coast on the Atlantic has some awe-inspiring courses such as Oitavos, and other top quality tracks like Praia D’El Ray and Quinta da Marinha. These old classics can be usurped by fantastic new venues which can be sure to make your golf in Portugal some of the best destinations for golf in the sun.
The coast of Lisbon, in golfing terms, has long been overshadowed by the Algarve, whose range of outstanding courses and resorts has rightly placed it at the sharp end of European golfing destinations. However, as the reach of low cost airlines continues to extend, the coastal area around Portugal’s capital has emerged as a fantastic location for a golf escape. There are established resorts such as Aroeira to the South of the city, while new developments like Campo Real, and particularly Praia D’El Rey to the North, have garnered considerable praise, and have put the region firmly on the map. The attraction of the Lisbon coast is that you can play terrific courses like Oitavos, Quinta da Marinha and Praia D’El Rey, but you can also get a genuine taste of the Portuguese culture. The capital city of Lisbon is a thriving hub of cultural activity where you will experience the vibrant combination produced when the traditional Portuguese charm meets the vitality of a young, up-and-coming urban environment.
The Algarve has become well known for its collection of top quality championship golf courses all along the coast. Faro can be reached from most international and major airports, and is within an hour of most of the destinations in the Algarve. Highlights in the Algarve include the Nicklaus designed resort at Monte Rei at Tavira and others like San Lorenzo and Quinta Do Lago. However the biggest star in the Algarve is the resort of Vilamoura, a harbour town that has been transformed into a superb comprehensive golfing resort.
Madeira is another area of Portugal that benefits from the all year round climate thanks to being situated just off the coast of North West Africa and has been long known as a beautiful holiday destination. The capital of Funchal is a blend of Madeiran culture and vibrancy introduced by the increase in tourism. All around the island can be found areas of outstanding natural beauty including the spectacular mountain views which can be found all over the island. Madeira also has some fantastic golf courses and hotels. Palheiro golf club has some spectacular views over the capital city and the ocean coastline. Santo da Serra has hosted the European tour event of the Madeira Open for some years and is a true test of golfing skill. Both these courses have put Madeira on the Portuguese map and has made it a good alternative to the Canary Islands or Portugal mainland.
