Bike Friendly Cities

There are many cities throughout the world that offer great biking experiences for residents and for tourists. It’s a great way to see a city and get around at your own convenience while traveling. This guide will share some of my favorite cities I’ve had the chance to visit and some of the great things these cities offer for bikers.

Amsterdam, Netherlands is known as the bike capital of the world and this city is number one on my list. 40% of all the traffic in Amsterdam is by bike, which is greater than any city. This helps keep the residents fit and healthy.

In Amsterdam, bicycle sheds are located throughout the city to park your bike and this has helped keep bikes safe. The Amsterdam Train Station is even building a parking garage that can store up to 10,000 bikes! Biking is a huge part of the culture there so hop on and fit right in!

Number 2 on my list goes to Portland, Oregon. Biking has recently become more and more popular in this city. The city has created a network that connects different parts of the city and makes it easy to get around.

The city offers a commuter program for low-income adults with their bikes as well as a course on commuter safety. For a beautiful ride, check out some of the off road trails the city offers. If you choose to ride the streets, enjoy the safety of the street lanes specifically designated for riders and the traffic signals.

In this next city, almost everyone personally owns a bike. Copenhagen, Denmark has created an extremely successful system for bikers. For this reason, it was once called “the city of bikes.”

The city of Copenhagen spends a generous budget on making biking safer and easier throughout the city. Recent surveys show that 32% of residents bike to work and they say it’s because it’s so easy! Copenhagen has even gone as far as banning cars from a certain neighborhood! In addition to creating a great biking culture, they’ve gone even further and provide free bikes throughout the city (a deposit must be left).

These are my three favorite cities for bikers. As a tourist, it makes it much easier to ride around given the sytstem these cities have set up. Hopefully you can enjoy biking through any of these great cities one day and fit in with the biking cultures that have been created!
